Each week one of my teenage sons rode with me to pick up our delivery. (This is a small feat for a 15 year old and a 17 year old to ride willingly with their mom somewhere each week!) We all looked forward to the weekly newsletter from the farm. We would get in the car right away, turn off the radio, and whomever was not driving would read the newsletter aloud on the ride home.
Before dinner that night we would re-read parts of the letter to everyone else at the table and discuss life on the farm. We all vicariously lived the ups and downs of the Frantz family - the drought, horses breaking loose, buying a pig, raising chicks, pneumonia, church gatherings, scallion "parties', and the birth of a new family member!
We had an excellent return on our money in terms of produce, and the personal connection was truly priceless. We can't wait until Spring and next season.
Here is a picture of our final delivery -
Kale, Chinese Cabbage, garlic, onions, sweet potatoes, turnips, and a tomato from a neighboring farmer.
We baked the turnips with our turkey for Thanksgiving. We cooked the greens from the turnips with a little ham, onion, and red pepper.
The sweet potatoes were baked alongside our stuffing and other sides. I peeled the potatoes and diced them large. We added canned peaches, brown sugar, ginger, and butter. We let that bake and bubble, and then added cashews on top before serving. They were great!
