This is our first year having a CSA (a weekly delivery from our organic produce farmers) and that is why we are documenting our deliveries. We have been more than pleasantly surprised by the return on our investment. In addition to receiving more than our fair market value of veggies, there are so many more benefits to our CSA; all organic no pesticides, reduced carbon foot-print (our farmers use real horse power only, delivery is within close proximity to our city, and no diesels are involved), eating with the seasons, and a support of local farmers and agriculture.
In addition to these expected byproducts of our CSA we also have an unexpected positive outcome - we have a great affection and appreciation for our farmers. It brings us joy and appreciation to think of our farm visit this spring, and we reminisce about it often. With the drought becoming increasingly worse, we also pray daily for our farmers and their prosperity. Our farmers are a young couple with 6 children, and another baby on the way. They have been providing CSAs for a few years, and are doing a great job of being ingenious when dealing with different challenges that farming presents - including the drought.
Each week we receive a newsletter from our farmers the Frantz family. The newsletters contain details of the week's farming, recipes, as well as endearing stories about the family from the week such as; adventures in traveling to purchase a pig, church gatherings to hoe a neighbor's fields, and many more stories. Each week as we drive home from picking up our purchase, one of our sons reads the newsletter aloud. Joanna Frantz writes so well and adds such interesting details, we all look forward to hearing the news from the farm.
