Processing Tips for Your Weekly Delivery

Community Supported Agriculture - We are really enjoying our weekly shipment of produce from our farmers at Fruitful Hills! Each week when we pick up our shipment we make sure that we process our veggies right away. It's really important to wash everything that we receive.  One week we had a moth fly out of our lettuce, and another week we had a little bug crawl out from our mixed greens. Talk about fresh!

A salad spinner is a fantastic investment for washing lettuce.

You don't want to store wet lettuce in the fridge. Wash and spin. Even though you have drained the lettuce, it's amazing how much more water leaves the lettuce spinning!

Our farmers write a newsletter to their CSA people every week. They suggest placing washed and dried greens into a slightly damp, clean cotton pillowcase, or lightly wrap them in a slightly damp, clean towel before refrigerating. I lay the greens onto a towel to dry, and then roll-up the towel and store in our veggie drawer. This has  worked well. We have fresh greens all week long until our next delivery. The greens stay fresh and crisp the whole week!
Our farmers also suggests to trim tops from radishes immediately to keep them crisp.
