What is CSA? Let's get started!

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) - We have been dipping our toes in the shallow end of CSA for a few years now - buying our beef from one farmer (Dodge City Beef - http://www.dodgecitybeef.com/) and shopping at local farmer's markets. We've attended the Kansas City Food Circle Expo (http://www.kcfoodcircle.org/) and looked, learned, talked, and toyed with the ideas presented. This year, we did it! We jumped into the deep end and we purchased a full share of produce from Fruitful Hills (http://www.kc-csac.org/join-a-csa/our-member-csas/fruitful-hills-csa/) We "bought a CSA."
We were hesitant, we had heard rumors of people purchasing a share of produce, only to receive okra - lots, and lots of okra. Okra is pretty much the only vegetable we won't eat, so that was our first question to our farmer this year, "Do you grow okra?" Michael of Fruitful Hills kindly responded, "No. Okra has such a long growing season, our customers don't really want okra every week."
We were in! It also helped that Fruitful Hills had photographs of each weeks' produce share from last year. It let us see the variety that we would receive.
Then, we received a postcard, a handwritten postcard confirming our order! The personal connection was there. It was an added bonus to our reasons for choosing a CSA share; organic, seasonal eating, and a big plus - reducing our carbon footprint.
